The butcher is in the Gnasher's Bit(e) strip in last week's Beano (issue 3646).

Mrs Creecher came along with the TV show and Dennis had never really had a regular teacher before.

Dennis has had a regular teacher before back in the 70's he had one complete with a mortarboard like the Bash Street Teacher. The character along with a number of older Dennis characters, like Nervous Rex, Nasty Norman, Stanley Livingstone, disappeared ages ago.

They cleared them out when the strip was changed to account for the 1996 cartoon, yeah. Stanley was replaced by the Colonel, and Slipper started to be used instead of generic coppers.

I'm sure these characters, with the exception of Nervous Rex, were dropped long before the 1996 cartoon. Also they had changed the character designs most noticeably of walter before the release of the Beano video. So this sort of Dennis revamping has numerous precedents.

I'm trying to remember what Soppy Susan looked like....I *think* she was skinny, with curly hair?

With glasses. But contrary to popular belief, she never appeared that often - probably more when Paterson was the artist than when Petrie did it. IIRC she appeared in the strip from an annual (1995?) with the "Watch Out, Minnie's About" campaign.

I always expected that a girl softy would be a delightfully fluffy, giggly creature with enormous eyelashes; but in the first Dennis the Menace series, the softy girl Matilda was a disappointment, as she looked prematurely middle-aged. (Fortunately, that was 10 years after I wanted to be Walter's girlfriend myself. ) Foo-Foo = always adorable, though (odd that s/he was male in the comic, but female in that TV series). Am I the only fan of Foo-Foo?

I seem to remember Soppy Susan was a bit prettier than Matilda; or maybe it just seemed thus because "Susan" = a much more alluring name than "Matilda".

Matilda looked like Walter wearing a wig.

I don't think Soppy Susan was even a main character, it was just that a girl called Soppy Susan happened to appear sometimes as the butt of Minnie's jokes. Rhyming appeal. :)

She never featured as much as Walter does in Dennis, but she was once as commonplace as Fatty Fudge.

Alliterative, actually. Sorry, couldn't let that pass.

This thread badly needs an update now, what with Mr Scrimp jumping into the Mayor's role, Foo-Foo being replaced with a cat, Angel Face, etc. I think it'd be a good idea to let things settle a bit first, though, because I've got a feeling the Beano isn't finished yet.
